Prairie Dock
Silphium terebinthinaceum

Prairie Dock is a tall, perennial, prairie plant, sometimes reaching ten feet in height.

The yellow flowers have many petals, and the very large, spade-shaped basal leaves (left, below) sometimes orient themselves along a north-south axis.

Prairie Dock occurs in the eastern tallgrass prairie region. I found this individual at Cressmoor Prairie, in northwestern Indiana. Member of the Aster Family.
