Jack-in-the-Pulpit Arisaema atrorubens Jack-in-the-Pulpit is a spring wildflower of woodlands. Experts differ on the number of species, with some lumping all Jacks into a single species, and others breaking them out into three. Whatever they're called, these are striking wildflowers. Though the flowers emerge in spring, the leaves can persist well into the summer. They can grow as high as three feet. Member of the Arum family. Left undisturbed, the plant will produce a clump of bright red berries, perched on a stalk (left, bottom). I photographed the top left individual in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. |
