Cup Plant
Silphium perfoliatum
The Cup Plant can grow to be eight feet tall. It occurs over much of the midwestern United States.
The stems are square, and some of the opposite leaves (left, below) are fused together at the stem to form a depression or "cup", hence the name of the plant.
After a rain water sometimes collects in those depressions, and I have seen goldfinches drinking from them.
Member of the Composite Family.
