Compass Plant
Silphium laciniatum

Compass Plant is a large prairie plant, up to eight feet tall. The flowers are sometimes large, four to five inches across, with many yellow petals. The basal leaves are very large and highly divided. I've been told, but haven't verified either by personal observation or written reference, that the name of this plant derives from the orientation of the basal leaves with the points of the compass.
