Promethea Moth Callosamia promethea The Promethea Moth is also sometimes known as the Spicebush Silkmoth. While generally not quite as large as some of our other silkmoths, the Promethea is still among the largest moths in North America. It exhibits sexual dimorphism, which is to say that males look different than females. The individual shown above left is a female and, though the colors in the photo are somewhat washed out by the camera flash, females exhibit a rich pattern of browns with lighter lines and trimmings. Males (below, left) are much darker, though somewhat paler on the outer edges of the wings. Promethea Moths are members of the Family Saturniidae, and are also known as Giant Silkworm Moths, so named because of their size and the silken cocoons in which they pupate. |
