Imperial Moth
Eacles imperialis

The Imperial Moth is among the largest North American moths. Its wingspan can reach up to six inches. I rescued the specimen at top left from a gas station in central Indiana, where it had been attracted to the lights and was in danger of being smashed.

Imperial Moth caterpillars are also quite large and somewhat fierce-looking. The caterpillar pictured below left was about 4 inches long; I found it feeding on sassafras leaves in the understory of an oak savanna nature preserve in northwestern Indiana.
