There are many species of reptiles and amphibians in North America. Behler and King, in The National Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Reptiles and Amphibians, offer the following species counts for North American north of Mexico:
  • Salamanders - 137 species
  • Frogs and Toads - 81 species
  • Crocodiles - 3 species
  • Turtles - 48 species
  • Lizards - 115 species
  • Snakes - 115 species
