Brown Snake
Storeria dekayi

Brown Snake, also known as DeKay's Snake. These snakes are usually pretty small; the record length is something like a foot and a half. I encountered the snake at top, left as it crossed a road in northeastern Indiana. I didn't measure it, but it was definitely longer than a foot.

Richard Milton provided the image at left, bottom; it gives an excellent idea of how small these snakes typically are. Richard reports that this snake "is common in marshes and moist woods throughout Indiana."
