American Alligator
Alligator mississippiensis
American Alligator. I grew up in Florida and always assumed these creatures were just a normal part of the outdoors. They are still common at Lake Alice, on the campus of my alma mater, the University of Florida. When my parents lived in Micanopy, just south of Gainesville, the pond in their back yard always had a resident gator. It would feast on the catfish my dad raised, and eventually grow large enough that they would have to call someone to remove it. Invariably a new, smaller gator would climb the fence and set up shop, and the cycle would start over again. I found this one posing nicely in Everglades National Park.
