Hay-scented Fern occurs in the northeastern United States and down along the Appalachians into northern Georgia and Alabama.

It is also known as Boulder Fern. This plant sometimes forms large, dense colonies.

As the name suggests, the crushed foliage has an odor reminiscent of new-mown hay.
