Eco-USA: Mindfulness
Mindfulness
Mindfulness is an awareness of one's thoughts, actions, motivations, and perhaps especially of one's responsibilities. It's an ancient concept, dating back at least to the time of Buddha, who listed it as the seventh element of his Noble Eightfold Path.

Though ancient, mindfulness is at least as relevant today as it has ever been. Human activities have always affected other people and the natural environment, but as we become more numerous and crowded, and stresses to the ecosphere multiply, the effects of our actions become more pronounced, and therefore even more worthy of our attention.

The goal here is not to preach, or induce guilt, or maintain that there is one true path to some sort of environmental consciousness or righteousness. Rather, the intent is to explore the ways in which the choices we make while going about our daily lives affect the world around us, and to do so in an accurate and unbiased manner.

Be wary of anyone who claims to know what is best for you in all things. We each have to find our own way. Instead of worrying about reaching some final destination, it may be best to focus on simply moving in the right direction.

Though it can be hard to cope with the din of loud and obnoxious voices urging their own view of reality, consider keeping your mind cautiously open to the experience and wisdom of others. This section of the Eco-USA site will be devoted to gathering and presenting some small fraction of the better and potentially useful ideas that are out there. I hope you find it useful.
