      Flora: Trout Lily

Trout Lily
Erythronium americanum

Trout Lily photo

The Trout Lily is a spring wildflower of moist woodlands. It is a member of the (surprise) Lily family and occurs in eastern North America as far south as Tennessee and Georgia. It typically stands several inches tall and produces a single nodding flower. They often occur in large patches, with only the older plants (usually those at least four years old) producing flowers. The mottled foliage can persist well into the summer. This species is also known as Adder's Tongue or Dogtooth Violet. Photographed in central Indiana.
