      Flora: Lead Plant

Lead Plant
Amorpha canescens

Lead Plant photo

The Lead Plant is also known as False Indigo, or Prairie Shoestring. It is a perennial prairie shrub found throughout the tallgrass prairie region. Its many small flowers are arrayed in spikes, and the leaves are divided into numerous leaflets. The lead plant is a member of the Pea Family. The individual pictured above was found in late July at Chiwaukee Prairie, in southeastern Wisconsin.
