      Flora: American Basswood

American Basswood
Tilia americana

American Basswood photo Found from Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri eastward, this member of the Basswood (or Linden) family grows up to 80 feet tall. Leaves are somewhat heart-shaped. Often planted in urban areas, though this particular tree was photographed at a state park in north-central Indiana. The wood is used commercially, especially for furniture, and Native Americans made use of the inner bark in fashioning rope. The flowers are highly favored by honeybees.
