Fauna: Promethea Moth Promethea Moth Callosamia promethea
The Promethea Moth is also sometimes known as the Spicebush Silkmoth. While generally not quite as large as some of our other silkmoths, the Promethea is still among the largest moths in North America. It exhibits sexual dimorphism, which is to say that males look different than females. The individual above is a female and, though the colors in the photo are somewhat washed out by the camera flash, females exhibit a rich pattern of browns with lighter lines and trimmings. The males are much darker, though somewhat paler on the outer edges of the wings. Promethea Moths are members of the Family Saturniidae, and are also known as Giant Silkworm Moths, so named because of their size and the silken cocoons in which they pupate. Photos of several other species of Giant Silkworm Moths are available on this site, as are photos of members of a closely related family, the Royal Moths.
