      Fauna: Great Spangled Fritillary

Great Spangled Fritillary
Speyeria cybele

Great Spangled Fritillary butterfly photoGreat Spangled Fritillaries are most often encountered in moist forests, meadows, and forest openings from June to mid-September. These are large butterflies, with wingspans ranging up to three inches. Eggs are laid in late August and September. The caterpillars hatch before overwintering, then feed on violets in the spring. Pyle states that the species occurs throughout the northern United States and ranges as far south as central California and northern Georgia, but is less common in the west. This individual was photographed in central Indiana.
