Jennifer Pedersen was kind enough to send in this photo of a Hawaiian Monk Seal. She writes:

I hope you enjoy this as much as we did when we saw this monk seal in Lahaina, Hawaii. I didn't think too much about this picture until we got home & I looked it up on the computer. Finding out there are only 1200 left in the world if I read it right is pretty sad. What an awesome opportunity we had to see this amazing animal. I hope you can enjoy it too.

A quick check of the Wikipedia page on Hawaiian Monk Seals confirms what Jennifer says about their endangered status and declining numbers. According to the Wikipedia article, they are under threat from shark attack, disease, human disturbance, and other factors.
