Eco-USA: Cohabitants: Insects: Imperial Moth
Imperial Moth
Eacles imperialis

Imperial Moths are among the largest North American moths, with wingspans reaching up to 6 inches. I rescued the specimen shown below from a gas station in central Indiana, where it had been attracted to the lights and was in danger of being smashed.

Imperial Moth caterpillars are also quite large and somewhat fierce-looking. The caterpillar pictured below was about 4 inches long; I found it feeding on sassafras leaves in the understory of an oak savanna nature preserve in northwestern Indiana.
