Red-backed Salamander
Plethodon cinereus


The Red-backed Salamander (Plethodon cinereus) is probably the most commonly seen salamander in Indiana. Color can vary from the red-back to the solid black, gray 'lead-back' phase. Red-backs can be found at almost any time of year in cool, damp forest environments.

Salamanders of the Plethodon genus omit the aquatic larval stage of growth. The young are fully-developed miniature adults at birth. The photo below depicts one of the smallest I have ever encountered. These specimens were discovered in the Lake Monroe area of Indiana. - Richard Milton
