Eco-USA: Cohabitants: Herps: Northern Dusky Salamander
Northern Dusky Salamander
Desmognathus fuscus

The Northern Dusky Salamander is abundant but elusive. Surprising quick and agile, the Dusky will leap to avoid capture. This is the only picture I was able to take before this specimen jumped to the forest floor and disappeared.

There are many subspecies of Dusky; the largest grow to about 5 and a half inches. Colors vary but most are indistinct shades of brown to gray. Their eyes are prominent and the jaw has a shovelnose appearance. Duskies are cold tolerant and can be found as far north as Quebec and New Brunswick, Canada. - Richard Milton
